ENDLESS HEIGHTS - FROM GURGLER TAL TO VENTER TAL

With his emergency landing at Gurgler Ferner in 1931, Prof. Auguste Piccard made this small mountain and glacier village famous overnight. He started a scientific high-altitude flight together with his assistant in Augsburg, they were the first people who tried to reach the stratosphere at 16,000 meters altitude in a hot-air balloon. But then they had to make an emergency landing in the glacier village. This high Alpine tour reveals all the beauty of a truly unique glacier world. Ramolhaus mountain hut, resembling an eagle's eyrie, is the only constant element in this bizarre mountain world. On Ramoljoch col at 3187 m, you reach the undisputed highlight of this long-distance hiking trail: stunning summits and Alpine peaks such as Wildspitze, Similaun or Hochfirst make a lovely backdrop. The end of this high-altitude stage is the mountaineering village of Vent, the cradle of alpinism.

    Tips and suggestions

    Did you know that…

… the Ötztal Alps have the highest mountains of the Eastern Alps, including more than 250 peaks higher than 3000 meters and countless glaciers?

    DAY TIP

Obergurgl –> Stone Pine Forest –> Langtalereck Hütte –> Piccard Bridge –> Obergurgl

The Piccard Bridge spans the rear ends of Gurgl's Glacier where the iconic balloon landing took place. A stone pine forest older than 300 years lines the way to this nature treasure. The incredible age of the stone pine population ranks among the region's rarities, therefore the forest was declared a natural monument already in 1963.
